Survivors: Get Help for Credit Abuse
The vast majority of domestic violence victims experience economic abuse during an abusive relationship, and finances are often cited as the most significant barrier to leaving an abusive relationship. Not only do abusers typically maintain control over financial resources, they tend to have unfettered access to personal information from their victims, such as social security numbers, bank records, and personal history. This puts survivors of domestic violence at risk for identity theft by the abuser.
To prevent further victimization, survivors should be especially aware of accounts opened in their names that were not authorized and charges made at times when a particular card or account was not in use. Survivors should also make sure that accounts are closed when requested.
